Ever since Ricky Martin came out with the "The Cup of life" in 1998, that has been the dream. To be where the world is waiting with it's Cup-of-Life. There has been no other world cup anthem that has caught my imagination like "The Cup of life". 20 years and 5 FIFA World Cups later, here we are. Russia 2018!. Growing up in Malabar where the football frenzy is one that can give the Latin Americans and Europeans a run for their money in terms of passion and loyalty, I'm sure it must have been my dad's dream as a kid to go watch one World Cup at least before the end of days. Things worked out this time and this-is-that-time.... The time we answer the world's call. Five of us- me, Achan, Babujimaman,Alikka and Rasheedka travel to Moscow to meet Fayez who is already professionally stationed there and we have a few games lined up for us. The fact that we are actually going to watch a world cup is only slowly, but steadily, sinking in.
When my town begins to show signs of welcoming the world cup with flags of different nation other than our own, I cant help but wonder how it would be if we ever played one. The shear immensity of the support would itslef be overwhelming.
Waiting to check in and board our flight to Moscow, there is relentless excitement running through me and Achan as we keep discussing the minutest irrelevant details of the upcoming dream-come-true sequence. The fact that I will be in Russia this time tomorrow struck me when I checked the world cup schedule of tomorrow's game, like every day, and was planing how and where to watch the game. That's when I realised that I will no longer be locally available! Ha! The game will have to be watched from one of the fan centers in Moscow! Bozhe Moi!
We fly to Domodedovo International Airport from Cochin today and this is how it begins!
Behold Russia!
